Baby clothing labels are full of promises: soft, breathable, hypoallergenic. Here is what those words should actually mean, and how to shop for pieces that last through wash after wash.
Fabric first
Look for organic cotton or bamboo blends. These fibers are gentler on sensitive skin, more breathable than synthetic blends, and tend to soften rather than pill after repeated washing. Avoid anything with a scratchy internal seam or tag — babies will let you know quickly if something bothers them.
Growing room
Premium doesn't have to mean impractical. Look for envelope necklines, expandable cuffs, and snap closures that make dressing (and diaper changes) faster. A well-designed onesie should survive a growth spurt or two.
Wash and wear
Check the care label before you buy. The best baby clothing holds its shape and color through dozens of hot washes, since spit-up and blowouts are a daily reality. If a piece needs delicate, hand-wash-only care, think twice before making it part of the daily rotation.
